It’s a Thursday evening. A balmy breeze moves through the church where rows of folks are gathered, eager to learn about a writer’s life and the inspiration for a novel, or to experience the way a poem settles into them, or to watch with fascination the building of a stone wall.
Union Church’s Summer Speaker Series provided all those things for our devoted attendees. We experienced Andre Dubus III’s charming and funny insights, and heard a poignant love letter from father to son; we were captivated by stories Jessica Shattuck told us, about what her grandmother experienced as an everyday German in World War II; we were moved by how Wesley McNair captured us northern New Englanders so eloquently in his poems; and utterly entranced by Kevin Gardner’s dexterous stone wall-building as he spoke about his interesting life.
Church, through the seemingly limitless hard work of so many, has given audiences moments like these for 18 years. Please extend your gratitude to committee members when you see them.
All proceeds from the Summer Speaker Series go to fund the mission outreach projects of Union Church. In 2019 we reached and exceeded our goal of raising $10,000 for this purpose.
In late September, some of the many people behind these accomplishments gathered at Rogers Pond in Kennebunk for a celebration picnic.
Our planning for the 2020 series begins in October, and we are looking forward to arranging for another good year.
